I am an accountant. Actually, I am more accurately described as an auditor but in the world of bean counters, if nowhere else, accountants are more socially acceptable than auditors. As an accountant/auditor I make it my business to understand business yet there has always been one financially lucrative industry that flummoxes me – the business of getting married. And in particular the social and financial etiquette around “gifting money”.

This (in my mind) alarming trend often presents itself disguised as a truly awful poem on the bottom of your invite, you know the type:

“What do you get for the bride and groom, whose house has things in every room?

A toaster? A kettle? Don’t buy it in haste.

We have many things which we’ve bought to our taste.

More things are not needed so don’t be rash, avoid the shops, please give us cash!”

Giving a gift at the wedding of a loved one is tradition I value but I can’t help but take objection to being asked for money by someone who just confessed to having everything. If you really do have all you need why not ask your guests to donate to a charity of personal significance?

I am no stranger to weddings (yes, even accountants/auditors get invited out from time to time). Despite being familiar with the bridal march I always stumble when it comes to the dilemma of how much to leave in the wishing well. Is $50 too little? Is $200 too generous? If only there was a neat mathematical equation to help guests arrive at the magical number. I imagine it would involve the sum of two individuals = 1 raised to the power of love. Or is that the formula for the marriage itself?

Perhaps an easier and livelier solution would be to auction off the seats at the ceremony? I would suggest a premium for front row and small change for the nose-bleed section. Guests can sit next to Uncle Bob for free.

For those of you thinking, “but what of the wedding registry?” The concept itself raises a few questions. It was first introduced in the 1920’s by Marshall Field & Company, a department store in Chicago. Hardly seems independent. It draws many comparisons to the famed ad campaign by De Beers which changed the tradition of the engagement ring with four little words; “A diamond is forever.”

If we are being frank, and I hope we are, the registry doesn’t leave me any warmer than the wishing well. I know the happy couple, or I should, why else am I being invited to share in such an important day of their lives? Can I not be trusted to select a personalised gift for them? In the world of the registry I find myself unable to make a selection which adequately captures my message of love and support. The blender, the iron or the steak knives?

I am also notoriously disorganised. For those similarly affected with this debilitating condition you will no doubt agree with me on this statement: Nothing says “congratulations on meeting and marrying the love of your life” like the pastiche of egg rings and spatulas not yet purchased on wedding eve.

In an industry which generates more than $2 billion annually in Australia alone, I wonder where we draw the line.

Brides and grooms of tomorrow, let friends and loved ones wish you well sans wishing wells and registries and return the business of getting married to the not for profit institution it should be.

Rebecca and Mark were married at Observatory Hill on Saturday with 40 of their closest friends and family surrounding them as they exchanged their vows. The weather was perfect, the surroundings were gorgeous and the ceremony was a sweet and intimate occasion. The newly weds and their loyal Bridal party, Michal and Amanda had a full afternoon of being photographed in and around Hyde Park and against sandstone lane-ways and arch-ways found within The Rocks, which allowed for some truly beautiful moments to be captured.

As night was fast approaching the Reception had already begun. Rebecca and Mark had chosen Wolfies in The Rocks for their Reception with spectacular views of both the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The speeches of the night were short and sweet, (well Amanda’s not so short, but made up in sweetness all the same). The guests also got quite creative in the evening, as they began making head bands and bandanas out of the table gorgeous decorations. After the cake was cut and Mark and Rebecca had shared their first dance together as a married couple, the guest all took to the dance floor where they remained until it was time to say goodbye. Taylor-Made Photography would like to say ‘thank-you’ to both Rebecca and Mark and their delightful families for allowing us to share in on a piece of their special day.

1.You were appointed by the Attorney-General in 1995 as an authorized Civil Marriage Celebrant and have conducted many ceremonies in Sydney since that time. Are there any stand-out moments in your time being a marriage celebrant?

Every wedding is special. I meet so many lovely couples, but a standout has to be when I conducted my daughter’s wedding in 2010. I thought the emotion of the moment might stop me from delivering a perfect ceremony, but I managed to keep it together and it all went beautifully. An amazing experience to say the least. I receive a lot of feedback from my couples, which makes it just so rewarding……whether it is a small home based ceremony or up to 200 people, each ceremony is unique.

2.What drew you into making a career of being a marriage celebrant?

When I was appointed I thought it would be a part-time job I could do while I had young children. I never dreamt it would soon turn into a fulltime profession for me with one part-time employee.

3. Sydney is filled with many wonderful locations (indoor and outdoors) for Wedding Ceremonies. Where is your favourite location you’ve worked on and why?

I seem to spend most of my wedding time around the harbour foreshores. I always take international couples to Cope’s Lookout at Kirribilli, as there are usually only a handful of people and they are all blown away with the view. I particularly like Gunners’ Barracks. The view as you walk down the hill is incredible. And I love the sandstone building. Great for photos.

4. On your blog you have a post where a grandmother came up to after one of your ceremony’s and exclaimed to you “I don’t agree with YOU people” (referring to Marriage Celebrants). With over 70% of couples choosing to use Celebrants in Australia today, why are people still disagreeing with your practice?

It is a minority obviously, but there are some people in the community who think weddings should be conducted in churches. Everyone is different and entitled to their opinion, but often these people are very pleasantly surprised when they attend a personalised, well written ceremony delivered by a warm and articulate celebrant in a professional manner.

5. Do you have any advice for couples planning on getting married on finding the right celebrant and or priest for their ceremony?

It is important the couple feels comfortable with their choice of celebrant. They also need to feel confident the celebrant will handle the day with professionalism and poise. The earlier you book your celebrant the better as good celebrants get booked out a long way in advance.

As every Wedding story begins with a couple getting engaged; the moment when a couple decides that this is the person they want to spend the rest of my life with. Today, many couples are opting to have a pre-wedding photo shoot with their chosen Wedding Photographer for a number of reasons;

Annie Leibovitz’s style of photography can precisely be summed up through this iconic image of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Annie at the time was working as chief photographer for Rolling Stone Magazine and was sent to get a photo of the pair. Annie inspired by the pairs recent album cover art Double Fantasy,

Sadly, after several hours, John was assassinated in front of his apartment. The photograph ran on the January 1981 cover of the Rolling Stone magazine to commemorate the former Beatle.

As the sun glistened over the tree lined streets of Glebe, the couple opted to stick to the streets, parks and lane-ways that surrounded us for their location photography. Within a one-hundred metre radius, some creativity and a couple who were born to be in front of the camera, we were able to capture some incredible images that we hope, will bring a lifetime of memories for Melissa and Troy’s as they look back on their special day.

The reception was held at The Star Function centre, located above the IMAX theatre, with one spectacular view and hospitality of a high standard. Each table dressed in adorable ornaments with the room lit by a sea of candles. The speeches were filled with tears, laughter and joy and also shed some light on why the Melissa and Troy were made for each other… Even dear, Eden had prepared a poem for the occasion. A big thank you to Troy and Melissa for letting us share in on their special day, you both are such beautiful individuals and we wish you a world of happiness together.
